Thursday 16th March 2017
Join Out of Joint for an Inset Day examining the influential and widely-used rehearsal methods of Max Stafford-Clark, Director of Out of Joint, former Artistic Director of the Royal Court Theatre and co-founder of Joint Stock.
You will work with Max to look at the process of actioning a text; playing with status; and using improvisation to build back stories or to unlock the drama of a scene.
The text we’ll use on the day is Top Girls by Caryl Churchill, the premiere of which Max directed at the Royal Court, and which he also directed for Out of Joint in 2011 in a production that transferred to the West End. Max is on the AQA syllabus as a prescribed practitioner and Top Girls is on the syllabus of several boards including Edexcel English Language and Literature, AQA English Literature and WJEC English Literature.
This is a great opportunity to work directly with Max Stafford-Clark, and gain skills and exercises to pass on in both the classroom and the rehearsal studio.
We’ve run Inset Days on a range of topics. Here is some feedback:
“A very interesting day full of technical insights and anecdotes that will be useful to me as a teacher. I could have listened to each of you discussing your work and the techniques for far longer – the time flew by.”
Rhianna Elsden, Queen Elizabeth School, Wimborne, 2016“This was an excellent course, filled with information and useful workshop ideas… My only negative – it ended too soon!”
Tanya Wakeford, Glenmoor and Winton Academies, 2016‘I found it a truly inspiring day which has energised me to try new techniques in my teaching and directing.’
Jude Gibson, Guildford High School, 2016‘Very good value for money… An inspirational day. Thank you.’
Rosemary Hill, The Play’s The Thing Theatre Company, 2016‘Meeting Max and others and hearing their experiences in working with verbatim theatre opened my eyes and gave me some more confidence to have a go… Thank you for a lovely day and for your energy and enthusiasm.’
George Fearnehough, The International School of Toulouse, 2015‘I had a lovely, inspiring day. The vibe that Max created was really relaxed yet still productive… I was also able to network with some new teachers which has in turn led to some great potential links.’
Emma Whitley, Everyman, 2015
